Update

Hey all!

Sorry I've been mega quiet recently...a lot has been going on in one way or another!

However, I'm off on holiday now for two weeks so that's good.

The silence will however continue but reviews will resume when I am back!

Hope you are all well!

A book with a love triangle: The Thoughts & Happenings of Wilfred Price Purveyor of Superior Funerals

Publisher: Corsair

What the book is about, is well, basically what the title is. It's about a portion of Wilfred's life.

I am going to prepare you, not a great deal really happens in this book, but it is rather pleasant to read. The style is enjoyable and being Welsh I enjoyed alllll the Welshisms. The humour in the book is also most definitely Welsh and I think it could be lost on those non-Welsh readers.

This was a very different book than I expected as it is basically a love story. However, this didn't put me off until the very end which was a bit too neat for what the rest of the book promised.

I am sure that there are many who will love this book 100% for all it's worth. I am in a 85% state of mind with this book due to the neat ending which wasn't really what was alluded too.

However, it was a pleasant read and I enjoyed the humour a lot.

Happy reading

A book that made you cry: The Silence

Publisher: Titan Books

Originally I had dubbed this 'a book set in the future' as it is set towards the end of next year, however it made me cry, twice, so I soon changed that as books hardly ever make me cry! I'm not telling you where I cried, but if you read this and do cry, I'd like to know, to see if I'm as weird as I thought, or not! The book also gave me nightmares! YAY!

Now on with the review...

I will start with OH HOLY JESUS! This is truly terrifying as it is one of those books where the events are not, in my mind any way, beyond the realms of possibility, and it makes me think about what I would do. Books like this make me panic and start thinking dark thoughts!

I loved the two different perspectives, those of Ally, the deaf daughter and Huw, the father. They gave you two very different perceptions of what is going on and you really got to know them. I totally fell for Huw and I also fell for Lynne, what a babe, and in my mind, the true hero of the book!

This was a fantastic read! I was on the edge of my seat, couldn't put it down and it filled me with adrenalin! The characters were wonderful and the love between the family unit in such horrendous times was beautifully created and sustained from start to finish, even when talking about past events.

The writing style was also stupendous and just up my street!

I really hope that this is going to be a stand alone book as it finished perfectly, in my eyes any way. I could see the scope for another book but I don't think it would be needed. I would read it though if there was another one.

Grab this book now, and read it! But have tissues handy and a place to hide or a cushion to hug!

Happy Reading

P.S. The fact that the characters are from Usk made me and Boy Geek laugh as no one is from there, except Boy Geek.

P.P.S. I was annoyed with the fact that in the book Ally is the daughter but in the blurb it is spelt Ali...poor proof reading there!

A book with antonyms in the title: The Life and Death of Sophie Stark

Publisher: W&N/Blue Rinder

I warn you in advance that this is going to be a pretty short review as I just can't really put in to words how I feel about this book very easily!

We are seeing Sophie Stark through the eyes of 6 people who she seemed to really have moved/impacted/affected etc. And the main thing I want to say about this book is that it is beautiful! I was only two chapters in and I was completely mesmerised by the entire thing. I was mesmerised by Sophie, by Allison, by Robbie, by how we were going to spend the entire book seeing Sophie through very different people and at very different times in her life!

I truly loved seeing Sophie via the eyes of other people from her brother, to her lover, to her college obsession. It was great to learn more about her...well not about her but what other people thought she was like. It was crazy to see how people perceive others so similarly in many ways but so differently in others. Sophie is just so enthralling!

THis really was a glorious, glorious book. It lacked all the pretence it could have held in spades, it was beautiful....truly beautiful!

Happy Reading
